Winsome Sears Dodges Questions on Her Dangerous Record on Reproductive Rights
New reporting from CNN exposes Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears for her failure to commit to protecting Virginians’ reproductive rights, as Sears once again makes it clear that banning abortion would be on the table if she becomes governor.
Sears “was noncommittal” when asked by CNN if she would consider enacting further restrictions on abortion rights in Virginia and “refus[ed] to clarify if … she would push for more restrictions if elected governor.”
Sears has a long record of supporting a near-total abortion ban in Virginia. As CNN notes, “Earle-Sears is steadfast in her socially conservative views, putting herself to the right of some Republicans,” including Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
“Winsome Sears has made it crystal clear that she would not hesitate to ban abortion rights if elected governor,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton. “For her to dodge questions just confirms she knows her dangerous agenda is unpopular and out of touch.”
As a reminder, Winsome Sears has an extreme anti-abortion record that’s wrong for Virginia:
-
Sears holds extreme positions “to Youngkin’s right” on reproductive rights and supported a near-total abortion ban before most women know they are pregnant.
-
Sears “noted her personal objection” to Virginia’s proposed constitutional amendment protecting reproductive rights in a “handwritten note,” saying she was “morally opposed” to protecting contraception, abortion, and IVF.
-
Sears has campaigned with groups that want to ban abortion nationwide and was exposed for touting endorsements from anti-abortion extremists.
-
As Lieutenant Governor presiding over the state Senate, Sears “couldn’t resist” casting the tie-breaking vote against legislation to guarantee the right to access contraception and birth control. The bill was later gutted then vetoed by Gov. Youngkin, leaving the door open to future attacks on Virginians’ access to contraception and birth control.
-
Sears has claimed that after conception, “the baby isn’t even [the mother’s] body, she’s got her own body. The blood running through the veins of the baby don’t belong to her, it’s not her blood.”
