Three of Derek Schmidt’s Former Bosses Have Now Endorsed Gov. Laura Kelly

Today, former Kansas Republican Attorney General Carla Stovall announced her support for Gov. Laura Kelly, the third of Derek Schmidt’s former bosses to pick Gov. Kelly over Schmidt, including former Republican U.S. Senator Nancy Kassebaum and former Republican Gov. Bill Graves.

After generally staying out of Kansas politics for decades, Stovall said in a video announcing her endorsement:

“Derek Schmidt used to work for me. I’ve known him a long time. I’ve seen how Derek has used my former office these last few years, and I worry he will replicate that in the governor’s office. He uses taxpayer dollars to pursue a specific political agenda that does not respect the views of most Kansans.”

This comes as Gov. Kelly has continued to build a broad coalition across the state, including many other prominent GOP endorsements. Meanwhile, Senator Roger Marshall recently let it slip that Schmidt at least has the backing of Sam Brownback, who Schmidt is desperate to avoid discussing after spending years defending his failed record.

“Top Kansas Republicans and  Derek Schmidt’s former bosses are throwing their support behind Gov. Laura Kelly because she’s a proven leader who can put politics aside to deliver huge bipartisan wins for Kansans,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Sam Newton. “When he loses this race, Schmidt will have to reevaluate who he lists as references on his next job application.”
