Sears Lies About Unemployment Numbers and Praises Trump in Disastrous Fox News Interview

Instead of standing up for Virginians as Donald Trump enacts DOGE 2.0, Winsome Sears had a disastrous interview on Fox News Sunday yesterday where she praised Trump and begged for his endorsement (which she still doesn’t have), lied about rising unemployment, and downplayed how Trump’s budget law closed three rural health clinics.

Praising Trump and begging for his endorsement: New polling shows Trump is unpopular and Virginians oppose his plan to fire more federal workers because of the shutdown, but Sears said that Trump is “doing really good things” and that she still wants his endorsement.

Fact-checked after lying about rising unemployment numbers: As Virginia’s unemployment rate has gone up for seven straight months this year, Sears was caught in an outright lie after claiming that “unemployment is down.” Fox host Shannon Bream fact-checked Sears, pointing out how Virginia’s unemployment rate has risen from 2.7 percent to 3.6 percent on Sears’ watch, causing Sears to respond by saying: “What are they measuring? I don’t know. I don’t know where they’re getting their stats from.”

Downplaying closure of rural health clinics: When asked about the three rural health clinics that are closing in Virginia thanks to Trump’s budget law, Sears said people who are concerned are trying to “instill fear in Virginians” and “the hospitals that are closing, they were closing long before.” In reality, the medical group in charge of the clinics said the closures are part of “ongoing response to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and the resulting realities for healthcare delivery.”
