One Month Post-Primary, Darren Bailey Shows His True Colors

Latest News

In the month since the ugly primary for Illinois governor, GOP nominee Darren Bailey has wasted no time showing his true colors. On every major issue, his far-right, extremist views have proven him completely out-of-touch with Illinoisans across the state.

Just days after the primary, tragedy hit home with the horrific July 4th shooting in Highland Park. A mere 90 minutes after the gunman opened fire, Darren Bailey posted a Facebook video urging Illinoisans to “move on” and “celebrate” the Fourth of July holiday. That wasn’t the first of his offensive comments and dangerous views. Shortly after the shooting, it was uncovered that Bailey had raffled off an AR-15 nearly identical to the one used in Highland Park. From voting against commonsense solutions to saying he’d rather “die on his porch” than give up his guns, Bailey’s far-right record shows just where he stands.

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Bailey didn’t hesitate to add in his two cents, saying: “I love the fact that the US Supreme Court did what they did.” That’s no surprise, considering he’s gone on the record opposing abortion even in case of extreme exceptions, and threatened to support measures to restrict abortions with firearm-esque waiting periods. While lawmakers in neighboring Indiana this week gathered for a special session to debate a near-total abortion ban, Bailey dodged countless opportunities to walk back his extreme views, making clear that a Bailey administration would dangerously threaten Illinois women’s right to choose.

As the House Select Committee on January 6th held a series of bombshell hearings, Darren Bailey dodged questions left and right in a desperate attempt to hide his long record of pushing the Big Lie and his ties to the violent insurrection. And while a group of Bailey-aligned lawmakers moved to censure Rep. Adam Kinzinger for his position on the January 6th Committee, Bailey slammed the GOP Representative, saying: “I don’t agree with anything that Adam Kinzinger stands for.” When push comes to shove, it’s clear Darren Bailey doesn’t hesitate to put himself over his country.

“When Darren Bailey shows his true colors, believe him,” said DGA Illinois Press Secretary Yael Sheinfeld. “From guns to abortion to the violent insurrection, Darren Bailey has wasted no time showing just how out-of-touch he is with Illinoisans everywhere. He’s wholly unfit to hold our state’s highest office, and voters know it.”
