“An Albatross”: Washington Post and NOTUS Highlight How Trump’s Medicaid Cuts Are a Problem for Winsome Sears and Jack Ciattarelli

New reporting from the Washington Post and NOTUS details how Trump’s budget bill that includes huge cuts to Medicaid and SNAP is going to create major problems for the Republican nominees in this year’s races for governor in New Jersey and Virginia.

In Virginia, Winsome Sears said the bill does “so many great things” – even though it would strip health care away from more than 322,000 Virginians. Meanwhile, in New Jersey where the bill threatens health care for over 300,000 people, Jack Ciattarelli championed the bill, saying “shame on any Republican across the country that doesn’t support this.”

• Washington Post: “While the bill Trump signed is a federal matter, the changes it makes to a host of programs, such as Medicaid and SNAP, will be something that governors nationwide must navigate. The Republican gubernatorial candidates in both states — Jack Ciattarelli in New Jersey and Winsome Earle-Sears in Virginia — have supported the broad outlines of the bill.”
• NOTUS: “The battle to define this law is officially underway. And 2025 is the first big test. A cursory glance at this year’s governors’ races since the bill was signed into law on July 4 shows it has already become the central topic. […] In an interview with Newsmax this weekend, Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears said the new law ‘does so many great things’ and attacked the Democratic nominee, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, for opposing it. Earle-Sears did not say the word ‘Medicaid’ once. Her campaign did not respond to a request for comment.”
