“You Already Made a Choice”: New Audio Once Again Reveals Winsome Sears Pushing Extreme Plans to Ban Abortion

Today, a new report from The Guardian uncovered audio of Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears outlining her plans for an extreme, near-total abortion ban in Virginia. Sears told a reporter that “she considered abortion to be ‘genocide’ and that she wanted to make abortion illegal in all cases unless the mother’s life was at risk.”

Sears doubled down on her extreme agenda, saying that “‘we need to make our choices before we’re pregnant, not, you know, after … you already made a choice.’”

This comes as Sears has been trying to lie about her dangerous and deeply unpopular record of opposing abortion rights and leaving the door open to restrictions on contraception.  ​​

“Once again, Winsome Sears is making it crystal clear that she supports a near-total abortion ban and would roll back reproductive rights as governor,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton. “Despite her attempts to lie to voters, Sears will always put her extreme agenda over what’s best for Virginians.”

Sears has a long record of opposing Virginian’s reproductive rights:

• As Lieutenant Governor presiding over the state Senate, Sears “couldn’t resist” casting the tie-breaking vote against legislation to guarantee the right to access contraception and birth control, which was later gutted by Gov. Youngkin, leaving the door open to future attacks on Virginians’ access to contraception and birth control.

• Sears has “noted her personal objection” to Virginia’s proposed amendment protecting reproductive rights in a “handwritten note.”

• Last year, Sears spoke at an event hosted by The Family Foundation of Virginia, a group which has compared IVF to “child trafficking” and deemed parents who use IVF to grow their families as “selfish.” Sears declared that she is “standing shoulder to shoulder” with this group who is opposed to IVF.

• Sears supports an extreme abortion ban “similar to the law that took effect in Texas” that bans abortion before most women know they are pregnant.

• Sears has claimed that after conception, “the baby isn’t even [the mother’s] body, she’s got her own body. The blood running through the veins of the baby don’t belong to her, it’s not her blood.”
