Kate Snow: “Things Are Really Changing In Maine Right Now”

Today, NBC’s Today Show profiled Maine’s innovative approach to fighting the opioid crisis. Police forces in the state have adopted a more comprehensive strategy that helps those struggling with addiction access treatment rather than forcing them into the criminal justice system. The profile also highlighted the changes that Gov. Janet Mills has already instituted in her short time since taking office. Mills issued an executive order that distributed 35,000 doses of Narcan around the state, began integrating substance abuse treatment into the criminal justice system, and created a network of 250 recovery coaches to be deployed throughout the state. Last year, her Republican predecessor actually vetoed legislation increasing the availability of overdose treatment.

HODA KOTB: It’s like you need more of those places where someone can go without fear of being arrested and know that they can start the rehab process.
KATE SNOW: That’s right. It’s really been making a difference in a lot of communities where there’s that kind of no judgment, “we’re just going to help you” kind of situation.
