Washington Post: States Face Massive New Costs Under Trump Budget Cuts

New reporting from the Washington Post spotlights how Trump and D.C. Republicans’ politically toxic budget bill that cuts Medicaid and SNAP will force “governors to cope with hundreds of millions of dollars in new costs each year,” with warnings that “projects ranging from roads to benefits programs are almost certain to be scaled back in coming years.”

The piece also outlines how roughly 10 million fewer people are expected to have Medicaid coverage over the next decade and 3.2 million fewer people are expected to participate in SNAP each month.

The budget bill is already playing a major role in this year’s governor’s races. Republican gubernatorial nominees Winsome Sears and Jack Ciattarelli have both praised the legislation, with Sears saying the bill does “so many great things,” and Ciattarelli calling for “shame on any Republican across the country that doesn’t support this.”

“While Republicans across the country embrace Trump and D.C. Republicans’ disastrous budget bill, its impacts are clearer than ever: this bill will cut health care and food assistance for millions of Americans while decimating state budgets to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Johanna Warshaw. “Democratic governors and candidates have been at the forefront of opposing this extreme, dangerous legislation, and every Republican running for governor will have to explain how they’ll deal with the devastating impacts of this bill on their state.”
