VIDEO: The Knives Came Out on Day 1 of GOP’s ‘Bloody Runoff’
WXIA Report – ‘Cagle, Kemp Sharpen GOP Runoff Attacks’
There’s a reason the Gainesville Times is already calling the race between Casey Cagle and Brian Kemp a “bloody runoff.” Both candidates used their first post-primary television sit-downs to amp up their attacks on each other.
Cagle went straight for Kemp’s record as Secretary of State, saying his work, particularly a data leak that exposed private records for millions of Georgians, shows a pattern of “not really being competent.”
“I think there is going to be a very stark contrast between my record and his record…his record of not really being competent in the position by which he was elected to as Secretary of State.
…There’s no excuse. If you were in the private sector, you would be fired.”
Kemp returned fire by attacking Cagle for not being far-right enough, even though Cagle spent the primary campaign attacking one of Georgia’s Fortune 100 businesses over social issues.
“That’s why you need to have a consistent conservative that’s not going to say one thing one week, and then when he starts getting hammered over it, change his mind.”

“The Georgia GOP runoff got nasty on Day 1 – and there are still 62 days left to go,” said DGA Spokesman Alex Japko. “The Republicans are busy destroying each other, while Democrats are united for the general election behind Stacey Abrams. And it’s only going to get worse for Republicans as they battle over narrow social issues that would hurt Georgia’s business climate.”
