VIDEO: New DGA Video Slams IL GOP Gubernatorial Field for Radical Anti-Choice Records

Latest News

The DGA is launching a new video today that hits the crowded GOP gubernatorial field for their radical anti-choice records. Watch the video here.

Darren Bailey has said he wants to outlaw abortion, even in cases of rape and incest, and Jesse Sullivan agrees on a near-total ban on abortion. Gary Rabine is a self-described “big pro-lifer,” and Paul Schimpf voted against  the IL state law protecting abortion access if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Gov. JB Pritzker, on the other hand, has made protecting the right to choose a priority throughout his governorship. In 2019, Gov. Pritzker signed sweeping legislation that established access to abortion as a “fundamental right” no matter what the Supreme Court rules and required insurance coverage for abortion, contraception, and related medical care. Following the Texas abortion ban signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, Gov. Pritzker said Illinois welcomes women who need reproductive health care.

“Darren Bailey, Jesse Sullivan, Gary Rabine, and Paul Schimpf are running on radical anti-choice stances that are completely out of touch with Illinois values,” said DGA Senior Communications Advisor Christina Amestoy. “This primary is only going to get nastier as the crowded field tries to out-Trump each other with anti-science, anti-safety, anti-choice policies. Meanwhile, Gov. JB Pritzker has signed sweeping legislation protecting abortion as a fundamental right.”

See below for the full transcript of the one-minute video:

Interviewer: If somebody were raped or it was a matter of incest in the family, would you allow that woman to have an abortion?

Darren Bailey: That’s something I guess I’m — right now, my answer is no.

Interviewer: No abortions except for the life of the mother. That’s your personal belief, would that be right?

Jesse Sullivan: Yeah, that’s a personal belief.

Gary Rabine: My wife and I are big pro-lifers. And she taught me, you know, how important it was. I didn’t understand it.
