Under Rauner, State of the State is… Broken
With Rauner, his personal agenda comes always comes first
New data shows Illinois lost 16,700 jobs last month, more than any other state
The State of the State in Illinois keeps getting worse under Bruce Rauner.
As Rauner delivers his State of the State Address today, the GOP governor will be recapping a legacy of prioritizing his own political agenda ahead of working families and the state’s economy.
Rauner campaigned on the notion of shaking-up Springfield. Instead, the state has gone backwards: “by nearly every measure, the state is worse off since Rauner took office,” the Crain’s Chicago Business editorial board wrote in June 2016. Fellow Republicans have also criticized Rauner for “holding a state spending plan hostage” and causing “permanent damage” to state government.
Under Rauner’s leadership, Illinois has seen one failure after another:
- After losing 16,700 jobs in the month of December, new data shows Illinois lost more jobs than any other state in the nation;
- Rauner’s refusal to negotiate a budget deal resulted in a record-breaking 18-month impasse that has damaged the economy and racked up more than $10.9 billion in unpaid bills;
- And, under Gov. Rauner Illinois’ credit rating has been cut 5 times – with additional downgrades looming – resulting in the worst state credit ratings in the nation.
“Bruce Rauner doesn’t need a full speech this afternoon. The State of the State under Bruce Rauner can be summarized in 4 words: Getting worse every day,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Since taking office, Bruce Rauner has focused on what’s best for Bruce Rauner, and the people of Illinois are paying the price. The state is hemorrhaging jobs, racking up $10.9 billion in unpaid bills, and stuck with the worst credit ratings in the country. Illinois needs a governor focused on growing the economy and moving the state forward, not one fixated on a right-wing agenda to benefit his buddies.”
