Trump’s Disastrous Budget Law Shuts Down Rural Maternal Care Unit in Georgia

GOP gubernatorial field backed Trump’s budget law that rips away health care, threatens rural hospitals, and jeopardizes manufacturing jobs

Donald Trump’s extreme budget law is taking away health care and shutting down rural health care providers across the country — this time in Georgia.

The latest example? “St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia is closing its labor and delivery unit,” citing “recent Congressional cuts to Medicaid” as a key factor in the closure, which will force expectant mothers to have to travel an hour to Athens to receive care.

It’s one of the clearest signs yet of the devastating impact Trump’s budget law is having on Georgia. According to experts, Trump’s disastrous budget law — which has been enthusiastically supported by gubernatorial candidates Chris Carr and Burt Jones — puts at least four rural hospitals across the state at risk of closure, takes away Medicaid from hundreds of thousands of Georgians, and risks the closure of 37 nursing homes.

“Burt Jones and Chris Carr cheered on Donald Trump’s disastrous budget law, which will now force expecting mothers in Lavonia and the surrounding area to travel as much as an hour to get basic maternal health care,” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “Instead of fighting for Georgians’ health care, Burt and Jones are cheering on D.C. Republicans’ unpopular agenda that is devastating rural health care and making it harder for expecting mothers to get the care they need.”

The closure of the St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital maternity care unit is just the latest example of Trump’s budget law shutting down rural health care providers across the country. Earlier this month, a medical group announced it was closing three rural health care clinics in Virginia as a direct result of Trump’s budget. Like Jones and Carr, Virginia GOP gubernatorial nominee Winsome Sears has cheered on Trump’s budget law, saying it “does so many great things.”
