“Trump-mania”: Inside New Jersey’s MAGA GOP Primary

DGA’s Izzi Levy: “The Republican primary has become a single-focus race, and that single focus is who can own the MAGA lane.”

In a new report, NOTUS details how New Jersey’s leading Republican candidates for governor – including two-time failed gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli and talk radio host Bill Spadea – “are sounding increasingly like President Donald Trump,” and “going MAGA” in the hopes to win Donald Trump’s endorsement.

As the report details, the contest for the MAGA crown has only heated up in recent weeks, with both candidates visiting with Trump at his golf club in Bedminster. Throughout the primary, both Ciattarelli and Spadea have “made their support for Trump central to their campaigns, including by accusing each other of being insufficiently loyal to the president” in TV and digital ads and on the debate stage. As NOTUS reports, this strategy could do more harm than good: “a poll released last week by New Jersey’s Stockton University said more than half of New Jersey voters rated the president’s performance so far as poor.”

New Jerseyans across the state have been seeing wall-to-wall coverage of this race to the far-right, including from NorthJersey.com, the New Jersey Globe, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the New Jersey Monitor, NJ.com, and the Associated Press – all in the last week alone.

“The Republican primary has become a single-focus race, and that single focus is who can own the MAGA lane,” said DGA Senior Communications Advisor Izzi Levy. “As Jack Ciattarelli and Bill Spadea pledge their allegiance to Trump above all else, they’re leaving New Jersey families and their top concerns behind. While Ciattarelli and Spadea duke it out in the hopes of being crowned the most MAGA candidate in the race, they’re ensuring an uphill battle for whoever makes it out of this primary alive.”
