Trump Keeping Distance From Toxic Ed Gillespie

Latest News

For the second time in two days, White House sources indicate that President Trump is steering clear of Virginia’s gubernatorial race where Gillespie’s toxic and desperate campaign is looking less and less likely to pull off a win.
The Washington Post reported today:
“[Some] Trump associates are advising him not to tie himself more closely to Gillespie in a state that Trump lost by 5 percentage points last year and where President Barack Obama is among the heavy hitters being brought into bolster the candidacy of Northam.
“I think it would be malpractice to send him into Virginia, this close to the election, knowing there’s a real possibility of a second embarrassing loss in a row,” said one Republican consultant close to the White House.
And the New York Times reported on Monday:
“Then there is the president’s calculation: Would he even want to risk attaching himself to a potential loser so soon after the Alabama race, in which he felt burned, according to White House officials. West Wing advisers say Mr. Trump is willing to record automated calls for Mr. Gillespie but is not clamoring to fire up Air Force One for the trip to Roanoke.”
“Ed Gillespie’s brand has grown so toxic that even President Trump is keeping his distance,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Donald Trump doesn’t want to be associated with a loser – and that’s what Ed Gillespie looks like right now. That’s why Donald Trump would rather campaign for the governor of South Carolina in 2018 than the Virginia candidate in 2017.”
