“The Extinction of the Republican Party”: What You Need to Know About Colorado GOP Nominee Victor Marx

Victor Marx is now the Republican nominee in Colorado after a week of counting votes, and even Republicans are unhappy. Marx’s leading opponent in the Republican primary Barbara Kirkmeyer has said that Marx’s victory in the primary “could be the extinction of the Republican party.

Here’s what you need to know about Victor Marx:

  1. Marx has received widespread national  (and Republican) ridicule over his bizarre claims about… committing murder? In an interview with 9NEWS’ Kyle Clark, Marx was asked if he thinks he’s killed any people as an adult, and he replied “Does it matter?” He also claimed he was forced to kill someone as a 7-year-old. When Marx won the nomination, his opponent Barbara Kirkmeyer tweeted that, “for the record, I still haven’t killed anyone.”
  2. Colorado Republicans are refusing to endorse Victor Marx. His GOP primary opponents, Barbara Kirkmeyer and Scott Bottoms, find him so “unfit” that they have said they will never endorse him. Earlier in the primary, Kirkmeyer blasted Marx, “You can’t keep your word. I can’t trust you… You’re unfit. You’re unqualified.” Bottoms also accused Marx of lying to him “personally quite a few times,” and said “I can’t put somebody like that any more than I can put a Democrat into the governor’s seat.”
  3. Marx’s leading opponent was uncomfortable being in the same room with him. On the debate stage, while standing near Marx, Barbara Kirkmeyer said his talk “about homicidal and suicidal tendencies” made her feel “a little worried about being in rooms with him.”
  4. Former Colorado GOP state chairman Dick Wadhams called a Marx win in the GOP primary a “death wish” and said “Republicans stand on the brink of total irrelevance and embarrassment” if they nominate Marx. He warned “If Colorado Republicans nominate either Marx or Bottoms, they will not only go down by historic margins, they will drag down every Republican candidate in every competitive statewide, state legislative and congressional race.”

“Colorado Republicans and Democrats can agree on one thing: Victor Marx is unfit to be Colorado’s next governor,” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe.
