The Advocate Shines Light on Three LGBTQ+ Democratic Governors for LGBTQ+ History Month
To celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, The Advocate, the oldest and largest LGBTQ+ publication in the country, sat down with the three history-making LGBTQ+ Democratic governors – Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek – to discuss their roles as executives and how they are fighting for the people of their states.
The Advocate noted that together, the three governors “paint a picture of hope and inclusivity.”
- Gov. Polis credited his “landslide victory” in 2022, when he won by 19 points, to “his state’s support for…inclusive policies” that “‘make Colorado better for everybody.’”
- Gov. Healey pledged to continue to protect Massachusetts’ LGBTQ+ community because “an attack on a singular community invariably jeopardizes everyone’s rights.”
- Gov. Kotek offered optimism amid nationwide attacks against the LGBTQ+ community, saying, “We are strong. We are resilient. We are not going back…That feeling is what keeps us all going.”
In 2022, Gov. Healey and Gov. Kotek became the country’s first elected openly lesbian governors. In 2018, Gov. Polis became the first openly gay man elected governor. In 2022, Gov. Polis also became the first gay married man elected governor.
