Texas GOP Candidate’s Top Adviser Tweets That Wendy Davis ‘Too Stupid To Be Governor’

A month ago, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (R), who is seeking to succeed Rick Perry as governor, came under fire for tweeting to thank a supporter for a sexist attack on a potential Democratic opponent. Now, his top political adviser has stepped into the same quagmire, tweeting that State Senator Wendy Davis (D) is “too stupid to be governor.”
Dave Carney, who ran Perry’s Texas campaigns from 1998 to 2012, is now Abbott’s top strategist. In 2010, he earned the ire of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palln (R) for calling one of the proposed details of the primary debate “just retarded.”
Thursday, Carney tweeted an article from a conservative Texas blog. The piece in question cheered the results of Tuesday’s Colorado recall elections and was called “Total Recall in CO (and why Wendy Davis is too Stupid to be Governor)” — a title included verbatim in his tweet.
he article slammed Davis’s gun views, identifying her as “Abortion Barbie,” and dismissed her as “even dumber than her fake blonde hair would imply.”
The Texas director for the Koch Brother’s Americans for Prosperity, Peggy Venable, admonished Carney that while she too believed Davis to be “out of step” with the views of Texas, it was “not an issue of Wendy Davis’ intelligence.”
In August, an Abbott supporter tweeted that the Attorney General “would absolutely demolish idiot” Wendy Davis and referred to her as “Retard Barbie.” Abbott responded by thanking him for his support. After other Twitter users blasted his judgment, Abbott added, “I thank supporters on Twitter, but I don’t endorse anyone’s offensive language. Stay positive.”
Davis, who has not indicated her plans for 2014, became a national celebrity in June when she mounted a 13-hour filibuster to block a virtual ban on abortion in the state.
