Statement from DGA Chair Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on the Supreme Court’s Ruling to Uphold the Affordable Care Act

Latest News

Democratic Governors Association Chair New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act:

“I am incredibly relieved the Supreme Court voted to uphold the Affordable Care Act today. But as we emerge from one of the worst public health crises in history, it’s even more clear that Americans’ access to affordable health care should have never been up for debate. Health care is a human right. It is unconscionable that Republicans have time and again attempted to gut the Affordable Care Act, putting nearly 30 million Americans’ health care coverage in jeopardy. Their attempts to take away health care would have had an especially detrimental impact on low-income and minority communities and the rural hospital systems that are already facing financial hardships.

“Since the Republican party began its attacks on the ACA, Democratic governors have been fighting relentlessly to ensure the ACA is protected at the state level as well. Nearly every state led by a Democratic governor has enshrined at least one key ACA protection into state law, including protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions. Republicans’ refusal to join Democrats in expanding health care access will be a major liability in the coming years as Americans in 36 states cast their vote for governor.

“Now that the Supreme Court has put Republicans’ most recent attempt to yank away Americans’ health care coverage to rest, hopefully Republicans can find a more productive use of their time — like finding ways to improve access to affordable health care or finally voting to pass the Democratic-led federal infrastructure and jobs package that Americans desperately need.”
