Shumlin touts record as he launches re-election campaign
His first two-year term nearing completion, Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin criss-crossed the state Monday meeting with the media, chatting with business owners and shaking hands with anyone who crossed his path before his official re-election campaign kick-off in Burlington. Shumlin has honed his message and will focus on several areas where he said he has delivered on campaign promises. The results are evident, he argued, pointing to an improved unemployment rate and other measures of economic improvement.
“When I ran two years ago I promised that I would focus like a laser on getting tough things done to create jobs and better economic opportunities for Vermonters. We’re making progress. We now have the fifth lowest unemployment rate in America. We have more green, clean jobs being produced per capita than any other state in the country. Home sales are up over the last year. Car sales are up 16 to 17 percent over the last year. We’re making real progress, but we have more work to do. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made on the jobs front, but we can’t get it all done in 24 months,” Shumlin said in an interview.
