RGA Chair Gov. Kim Reynolds Calls Special Session to Push Extreme & Unpopular Abortion Ban

After Voters Rejected Anti-Choice GOP Nominees for Governor in 2022, RGA Chair Continues Down Path of Extremism

Iowa Governor and RGA Chair Kim Reynolds has called a special session, forcing state lawmakers to return to the capitol to push for a dangerous and extreme abortion ban.

This comes after the Iowa Supreme Court’s deadlock vote “permanently blocked” Gov. Reynold’s previous plan that “would have banned nearly all abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy.”

In Iowa, an overwhelming majority of voters – from all political backgrounds – support access to reproductive rights. According to a Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll from March of 2023, “61% of Iowans said abortion should be legal in all or most cases.”

In 2022, the RGA lost several races in key states after supporting extreme, anti-choice candidates, including Tudor Dixon in Michigan, Kari Lake in Arizona, Doug Mastriano in Pennsylvania, Tim Michels in Wisconsin, and more.

“The RGA was dealt major blows at ballot boxes across the country in 2022 because voters overwhelmingly rejected GOP candidates who ran on banning abortion – often without exceptions for rape or incest. As RGA Chair, Kim Reynolds’ special session to ban abortion shows they’re doubling down on dangerous and extreme bans,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton.
