Rebecca Kleefisch and Tim Michels Previously Backed by Radical Anti-Abortion Group Pushing to Remove Life of the Mother Exception

National Journal: “[The Group] Would Also Need an Antiabortion Governor to Get Such Changes”

An extreme anti-abortion group that has backed both Rebecca Kleefisch and Tim Michels in the past said they would lobby a Republican governor to remove the life of the mother exception from Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban — which already has no exceptions for rape or incest.

The National Journal reported that the legislative director for Pro-Life Wisconsin “said that he would like to ‘tighten up’ the language in the 1849 law to remove an exemption that allows for abortion to save the life of the mother … They would also need an antiabortion governor to get such changes to the 1849 law.”

Kleefisch and Michels both staunchly support the 1849 abortion ban and Michels has indicated he would be open to changes that could make it even more restrictive.

“It certainly shows that there could be consequences for who is elected, in the sense that a unified Republican government where the governor and the legislature would be free to modify or add anything they wanted,” said pollster Charles Franklin. “Evers could be counted on to veto anything that further restricts abortion.”

“The anti-abortion extremists who support banning contraception and abortions without exception are foaming at the mouth for a chance to lobby a Republican governor for even more radical restrictions in Wisconsin,” said DGA Senior Communications Advisor Christina Amestoy. “Rebecca Kleefisch and Tim Michels have already said they support a near-total ban — how much further will they go to strip women’s rights away?”
