PSC Wins Give Georgia Democrats Huge Momentum for Competitive 2026 Gov Race

Yesterday, Georgia Democrats Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard won their elections to the state Public Service Commission — the first time Democrats have won a nonfederal statewide race in Georgia since 2006.

The victories are the clearest signs yet that the momentum is with Democrats heading into 2026, when Georgia will hold its first open gubernatorial race in eight years.

Johnson and Hubbard’s wins underscore Democrats’ strength — and put the Republican gubernatorial candidates on notice.

“Yesterday’s PSC results make clear that Georgia’s gubernatorial race is a top flip opportunity for Democrats. Georgians are ready for change and Democrats have the clear momentum heading into next year’s gubernatorial race,” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “Yesterday’s results are a canary in the coal mine for Burt Jones, Chris Carr, and Brad Raffensperger. Georgians have made clear that they want leaders who will fight for them — not politicians who are just a rubber stamp for an unpopular agenda that jacks up costs on working families.”

Background on Georgia’s Chaotic, Messy GOP Gubernatorial Primary

The GOP gubernatorial candidates remain locked in a chaotic and messy race to the right that is focused more on attacking each other than addressing the priorities Georgians care about. Issues like skyrocketing costs and health care are already emerging as a major liability for Republican gubernatorial candidates Burt Jones, Brad Raffensperger, and Chris Carr. All of the GOP gubernatorial candidates have records of supporting cost-raising tariffs, opposing Medicaid expansion, and backing Trump’s tax law, which is jacking up health care premiums for Georgians and has already closed a maternal care unit.
