One Week Later: What Did Kelly Ayotte Know About Jon Stone And When?
One week after a report uncovered a mass shooting threat by an Ayotte endorser, campaign “did not respond to questions about whether authorities took adequate steps in 2006 and 2007 to hold Stone accountable” when she was serving as AG
One week ago, InDepthNH released a shocking report that state Representative Jon Stone, an early endorser of Kelly Ayotte’s gubernatorial campaign, “threatened to kill fellow police officers in a shooting spree, and murder his chief after raping the chief’s wife and children, all while he was already under scrutiny for his inappropriate relationship with a teen girl.”
Since then, Ayotte has refused to renounce Stone’s endorsement or condemn these horrifying findings. His name is still listed on Ayotte’s campaign endorsements page and a post of them campaigning together still remains live on her social media.
Now, the Boston Globe reports, not only has Ayotte “kept mum,” but she knew about the incident even before accepting Stone’s endorsement.
The new reporting noted that Ayotte served as Attorney General while this scandal unfolded, and that “she served on the Police Standards & Training Council.” Ayotte’s “spokespeople did not respond to questions about whether authorities took adequate steps in 2006 and 2007 to hold Stone accountable.” This is a trend for Ayotte, who has been dodging questions on this from reporters all week, including the New Hampshire Union Leader and Politico.
“It’s been a week since the scandal involving one of Kelly Ayotte’s earliest endorsers broke, and she’s done nothing to reassure Granite Staters that she’ll put politics aside even to condemn violence against police officers and their families,” said DGA States Press Secretary Emma O’Brien. “Instead, she’s dodged every question and has refused to renounce Stone’s endorsement. Ayotte must answer to the people of New Hampshire: what did she know as Attorney General about Jon Stone, and why did she accept his endorsement in the first place?”
