NRCC Chair Tom Emmer Won’t Rule Out Backing GOP Candidates Who Attended the Jan 6th Attack: Will the RGA and Doug Ducey Follow Suit?

Latest News

In a recent town hall, National Republican Congressional Committee Chair and Minnesota Congressman Tom Emmer refused to say whether or not he would decline to support congressional candidates who attended the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol that left 5 people dead. When asked, Emmer not only refused to condemn the mob of Donald Trump supporters who attacked the Capitol and assaulted police officers but also left open the possibility of supporting them as congressional candidates.

As the NRCC apparently has no problem supporting candidates who were involved in the January 6th insurrection; the question is, will Doug Ducey and the RGA do the same? Ducey has largely stayed silent while key Republican governors have pushed Trump’s false claims and conspiracies and has looked the other way while the field of potential GOP gubernatorial candidates grows saturated with extremists who have pushed the ‘Big Lie’ that led to the attack, and some who attended the attack themselves.

Ducey and the RGA are already caught in the middle of the GOP’s civil war, as Republicans clash over the results of the 2020 election, the violent insurrection on January 6th, and Trump’s false conspiracies. The DGA recently launched rgaindisarray.com, which details the Republican Party’s ongoing brawl.

The problems continue for Ducey in his growing recruitment problem, with top Republicans across the country balking at the idea of running for governor. His refusal to condemn his party’s open embrace of the Big Lie shows he’s willing to scrape the bottom of the barrel when it comes to potential candidates for governor.

“Doug Ducey’s recruitment prospects are so abysmal, he’s left with a field of far-right extremists, who peddle the conspiracy theory that the 2020 election was stolen,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner. “The GOP has proven they are more willing to stand with violent insurrectionists, than with the American people. Ducey must end his silence and answer whether or not the RGA will support these extremist candidates.”
