NEWS ROUNDUP: Cooper Launches Bid for NC Gov

Monday, speaking to a room full of supporters in Rocky Mount, NC, Attorney General Roy Cooper formally declared his bid for Governor. TV news coverage highlighted the “packed house” of Democrats in Cooper’s hometown. Watch a video roundup here.

The New York Times called the race “one of the most heavily anticipated,” saying it “could be the most competitive governor’s race in the country next year.” The Washington Post added that Cooper’s formal launch “sets the stage for a marquee race of 2016.”    

In North Carolina, The Raleigh News and Observer reported on Cooper’s launch: “Attorney General Roy Cooper presented himself to voters Monday as a standard-bearer who can restore North Carolina to a legacy tarnished by three years of Republican domination by recommitting to education and fighting for the working class and small businesses.”

The Greensboro News & Record editorialized that, “Cooper’s political career is practically unblemished.”

Cooper’s hometown newspaper, the Rocky Mount Telegram, also reported on the announcement citing his focus on the middle class and raising wages.  Monday’s front page is below.
