Newly-Elected Governors Flood the Airwaves After Historic Victories

A new slate of Democratic governors-elect made history this past Tuesday, and they are hitting the airwaves to spotlight how their historic leadership will build brighter, more affordable futures for each of their states.

The wins of Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, Dr. Amy Acton in Ohio, Gina Hinojosa in Texas, and Deb Haaland in New Mexico mark historic firsts for each of their states and for the country. Bottoms will be the first woman governor of Georgia and the first Black woman to be elected governor nationwide; and Dr. Acton will be the first woman elected to serve as governor of Ohio. Hinojosa will be the first Latina governor of Texas; and Haaland will be the first Native American woman to serve as governor.

WATCH the governors-elect below:

Gov-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms on ABC:

“My heart is full. I have so many emotions, and on the eve of the election, I found my great-great-grandmother’s grave. I know we had also spoken about my family’s history in Georgia, and she was once enslaved in Crawfordville, Georgia. So it was really just, I think a preview to the special night that we were going to have on Tuesday and just this reminder of these shoulders that I stand on.”

Gov-elect Dr. Amy Acton on CBS:

“People are exhausted of living this way. They are tired of the hate and chaos and vitriol. I’m a scrappy kid from Youngstown. I’m not afraid of a fight. But kindness isn’t weakness, and that’s the big message we saw. People are ready for public service, unity, and decency again.”

Gov-elect Gina Hinojosa on CNN:

“People want a change. Listen, people are struggling in a big way in this high-cost economy. They knew Greg Abbott had been there a long time and they just wanted change… It’s just that they want a new way forward, and so that created opportunity, and we made a case that was strictly about kitchen table issues, public schools, and that is a Texas agenda.”

Gov-elect Deb Haaland on ABC:

“Well, of course, representation matters…We have a president who’s working overtime to essentially rewrite history. And I think it’s so important that… we bring representation from our perspectives, from communities that have been historically underrepresented.”
