New VAGOV Poll: Dems Lead by Double Digits, As Trump Numbers Plummet
Quinnipiac Poll in Virginia Shows Trump Unpopularity Hurting Gillespie
President Trump’s agenda is sullying the GOP brand in the battleground Virginia 2017 gubernatorial race. Today, a new Quinnipiac Poll shows both Democratic candidates for governor in Virginia have double-digit leads in a hypothetical race against Republican candidates.
Former Congressman Tom Perriello and Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam lead Gillespie 46-33 and 44-33, respectively. The two lead other GOP candidates by similar margins.
The poll also shows President Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a lowly 36% in the commonwealth. Meanwhile, Governor Terry McAuliffe enjoys a 52% approval rating.
“Donald Trump’s unpopularity is hurting Republicans on both sides of the Potomac,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “The Democratic candidate will be in a strong position to defeat a Trump-backing Republican in November. Virginia Republicans will continue struggling to explain their full-throated support for Donald Trump’s disastrous agenda to wreak havoc on the Virginia economy.”
