New Report Underscores Ties Between Mark Robinson and “Seriously Deficient” Nonprofit
What did Robinson know and when?
New reporting from WUNC highlights how “a nonprofit led by Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s wife was found ‘seriously deficient’ following an N.C. Department of Health and Services review,” raising serious questions about what Robinon knew about Balanced Nutrition’s failures and when.
The investigation also calls out the failed and controversial nonprofit for a number of serious issues including:
- “Missing documents required to administer a federally funded food program for childcare centers, as well as claims filed for payment for centers that apparently hadn’t requested or received money.”
- Balanced Nutrition “filed reimbursement claims for a childcare center called Gingerbread Learning Center eight times in 2023 and early 2024, even though that facility didn’t file a claim through Balanced Nutrition” and that the organization “‘failed to file valid claims’ for nine of the facilities it was working with.”
- The organization “‘did not report expenses accurately and unallowable expenses were claimed’ for four different centers.”
Robinson wrote in his book that this organization is what “allowed him to quit his job and move into politics,” with additional documents showing that Robinson at one point was employed by Balanced Nutrition as a “monitor.”
Later, the organization was cited for failing “to accurately monitor facilities under its sponsorship.”
“Mark Robinson’s close connection to this failed and ‘seriously deficient’ organization is deeply alarming,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. “Robinson owes North Carolinians an explanation about his involvement in this series of major failures and exactly how this organization was using taxpayer dollars.”
