New Poll: Trump and Snyder Very Unpopular in Michigan
Sagging Approval Raises GOP Concern Heading into 2018 Gubernatorial Race
Today a new EPIC-MRA poll shows Michigan voters are deeply unhappy with President Donald rump and Gov. Rick Snyder. Both executives have approval ratings hovering in the thirties, with Trump at 35 percent and Snyder at 38 percent. The president’s many controversies and the governor’s lingering problems surrounding the Flint water crisis have tarnished the Republican brand in Michigan.
The numbers should be extremely troubling to two more Republicans: Attorney General Bill Schuette and Lt. Governor Brian Calley. Vying for the nomination in next year’s governor race, Calley and Schuette have both cozied up to Trump and been saddled with the baggage of the Snyder administration.
Earlier this year, Schuette hinted he was seeking out the President’s endorsement in the primary:
“‘The Trump administration has a keen interest in making sure the blue wall stays demolished,’ Schuette told BuzzFeed News. Trump is ‘very aware I helped. I didn’t abandon the party.’
Calley countered by delivering a speech in February that included a full-throated endorsement of the president’s agenda:
“Calley also addressed delegates in an enthusiastic speech praising Trump as, ‘a president that is doing exactly what he said he was going to do.’”
“Donald Trump and Rick Snyder have deeply damaged the Republican brand in Michigan,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Both Bill Schuette and Brian Calley have embraced President Trump’s policies that hurt Michigan. This poll shows that the Michigan governor’s race is a major pickup opportunity for Democrats in 2018.”
