NEW: Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears Wrote Note of Opposition to Protecting Marriage Equality for Virginians

New reporting from the Virginia Scope found that after the legislature passed a bill protecting marriage equality last spring, and before Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed it into law, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears took the unusual step of adding a handwritten note of opposition on the bill itself, stating that she remains “morally opposed” to protecting the fundamental freedom of marriage equality for all Virginians.

While Sears’ note is new information, her opposition to LGTBQ+ rights is not. Sears has held anti-LGBTQ+ views for decades, and even campaigned with and celebrated the endorsement of E.W. Jackson, a staunch anti-LGBTQ+ bishop who has a long history of spewing hateful rhetoric against LGBTQ+ Americans, when she ran for lieutenant governor in 2021.

“This newly unearthed note shows that ripping away rights is a top priority for Winsome Earle-Sears,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz.“Her extremism toward Virginia’s LGBTQ+ community is wrong, dangerous, and completely disqualifying for anyone seeking the governor’s office.”
