NEW: Elise Stefanik Hasn’t Hosted a Town Hall in Six Years

A new report from the Watertown Daily Times reveals that Elise Stefanik has not hosted a town hall in her district in six years — refusing to face her constituents after spending years selling out New Yorkers to score political points with Donald Trump.

Stefanik — who “hasn’t hosted a public, in-person meeting for her constituents” since October 2019 — was booed off the stage and “jeered relentlessly” at a recent event after voting for Trump’s deeply unpopular budget law that raises costs and rips health care away from New Yorkers to give tax breaks to billionaires.

Stefanik has also come under fire for enthusiastically backing Trump’s job-killing tariffs that are hurting farmers and small businesses across upstate New York, including those in her own district.

“Elise Stefanik has spent years selling out New Yorkers to Donald Trump. It’s no wonder she doesn’t want to meet them face to face and be held accountable for her record of standing with Trump to raise costs, take away health care, and kill jobs,” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe.

Read more from the Watertown Daily Times on how Elise Stefanik refuses to answer for selling out New Yorkers to Trump:

  • It’s been nearly six years since Rep. Elise M. Stefanik has hosted a face-to-face town hall for constituents in her sprawling north country district.
  • A Watertown Daily Times review of the congresswoman’s schedule, public postings and media accounts shows that Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, hasn’t hosted an in-person town hall in NY-21 since Oct. 11, 2019.
  • Subsequent in-district events have largely been Republican or Conservative fundraisers, choreographed visits to county fairs or other fair-weather events, personal visits with businesses and coordinated press events.
  • Most recently in-district, Stefanik planned to speak at a Clinton County event on Aug. 18, naming a building in honor of a late Republican official who worked for the county. This was not a political event, and Stefanik was to deliver a few remarks on the legacy of the late Clinton County clerk John H. Zurlo.
  • Stefanik was repeatedly interrupted during her prepared remarks, shouted down from the podium by a group of protesters who showed up at the public event. She did not take questions from the public. Some of the protesters who interrupted Stefanik’s remarks there called on her to host a town hall meeting.
  • Stefanik’s most recent advertised visits to the district, besides the Clinton County event, were for her “North Country Thank You” tour in February of this year. The congresswoman hosted a series of pre-planned events across the district to meet with supporters and local Republicans, thanking them for their more than a decade of support and partnership.
  • That tour, which was not geared toward meeting constituents and did not feature a question-and-answer forum with the public, turned out to be too hasty, and the job Stefanik expected to leave the district to take with the Trump administration, ambassador to the United Nations, did not end up hers.
