NEW AUDIO: As Roe V. Wade is Threatened like Never Before, James Craig Vows “I Will Do Whatever I Can” to Keep Total Abortion Ban on the Books in Michigan
A secret recording captured Michigan GOP candidate for governor James Craig taking an extreme stance on restricting reproductive rights. In the recording, Craig promised to do “whatever I can” to restrict abortion by stopping the repeal of an archaic Michigan law that completely bans abortion.
The nearly 100-year-old law that Craig supports keeping on the books makes it a felony to perform an abortion and was nullified following Roe v. Wade. If Roe were overturned, it would immediately make Michigan among the nation’s most extreme for abortion laws by criminalizing abortion as manslaughter and classifying health care providers who perform abortions as felons.
Detroit Metro Times reports that in the recording “Craig is asked if he would stop Democrats ‘from undoing the law that makes abortion illegal in Michigan.’” Craig responded by saying “I will do whatever I can.”
Craig’s secret dangerous position on reproductive rights comes to light after he recently dodged questions in public on whether or not he supports abortion in cases of rape or incest. When asked point-blank if he supports an exemption in such cases, Craig responded by saying “I don’t have a hard and fast line on it.”
“After dodging questions publicly to hide his radical views from voters, James Craig’s first solid position as a gubernatorial candidate is to ensure an extreme total ban on abortions with criminal penalties in Michigan if Roe v. Wade is overturned,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Sam Newton. “If elected, James Craig would put people’s health and lives at risk, while jeopardizing the state’s economy. Michigan can’t afford Craig’s extreme agenda on eliminating basic reproductive rights.”
