Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte Funds Extreme Anti-Abortion Centers While Signing Extreme Anti-Abortion Legislation
New reporting from Friday reveals that Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte has “donat[ed] millions in personal funds to anti-choice pregnancy centers and organizations that oppose reproductive rights,” peddling dangerous and debunked misinformation to women seeking reproductive care.
Since 2018, Gianforte has donated at least $4 milliondollars to anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers both in and outside of Montana. At least $1.9 million of that has come since he became governor in 2021.
One center which Gianforte donated $90,000 to between 2018 and 2022 spread false information that “conception from rape is extremely rare,” suggested that condoms are harmful and ineffective, and falsely claimed that birth control pills “can and do kill little human beings.”
In addition to bankrolling organizations that work to strip away reproductive freedom and push dangerous lies, Gianforte has used the governor’s office to sign multiple abortion bans without exceptions for rape and incest, in defiance of voters who strongly rejected abortion restrictions at the ballot box in 2022, and which have been repeatedly struck down as unconstitutional.
Gianforte has also donated nearly $1.3 million to one of the major opponents of Montana’s proposed ballot amendment to enshrine reproductive rights in the state constitution this November.
“Even as Governor Greg Gianforte has made banning abortion without any exceptions for rape and incest a major priority of his first term in office, he’s also been working overtime to fund organizations that peddle dangerous lies and make it harder and less safe for Montana women to get reproductive care,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. “Montanans know they cannot trust Gianforte to respect their state’s constitution or protect their reproductive freedom, and his anti-choice extremism has no place in the governor’s office.”
