Mississippi Today: 21% of Republican primary voters back Brandon Presley over GOP Gov. Tate Reeves

A new poll from Mississippi Today/Siena College shows “one-of-every-five likely Republican primary voters would vote for Democrat Brandon Presley over incumbent Republican Gov. Tate Reeves in the November general election.”

This new poll is just the latest sign of Reeves’ deep unpopularity and increasing vulnerability as he faces scrutiny for his role in Mississippi’s landmark welfare fraud scandal — including breaking his promise to return campaign donations from individuals who pleaded guilty to misspending millions of dollars meant for working Mississippians — and forces those around him to do damage control as he stokes primary battles within his own party.

“Take one look at Tate Reeves’ failed record, and it’s clear why Mississippians across party lines are ready for new leadership, ”said DGA Deputy Communications Director Izzi Levy. “Mississippians know that Reeves only looks out for himself and his political cronies, and they know Brandon Presley is the only candidate in this race who will actually put Mississippi first.”

The same poll also shows more than three-quarters of Mississippi Republicans support axing the state’s grocery tax, and more than half favor expanding Medicaid, and comes on the same day as Brandon Presley released the first plank of his Cutting Taxes, Creating Jobs Plan — beginning with eliminating the grocery tax.
