Mike Cooney Smashes Fundraising Records, Nearly Doubling Gov. Bullock’s Haul Over Similar Period During His Successful 2016 Run
Cooney’s Haul Fueled by Montanans and Grassroots Donors
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Cooney smashed fundraising records during the first major fundraising period thanks to support from grassroots donors and Montanans. Cooney raised over $720,000, nearly doubling the amount that Gov. Steve Bullock raised during his 2016 run, despite new campaign finance limits.
Cooney raised more than half of his funds from small, online donations and 70% from Montanans, while Republican candidate New Jersey millionaire Greg Gianforte is funding his campaign with millions of dollars of his own personal wealth.
Cooney has gained momentum in recent weeks as his campaign highlighted his plans to protect public lands, support long-term economic growth, and ban a statewide sales tax.
“Mike Cooney’s impressive fundraising haul was fueled by grassroots support from everyday Montanans, while New Jersey multi-millionaire Greg Gianforte is using his personal wealth in an attempt to buy the governor’s seat,” said DGA National Press Secretary Jerusalem Demsas. “Gianforte spent millions to lose to Gov. Bullock in 2016 and we’re looking forward to the re-run this November.”
