Mark Robinson Under Fire For Saying Abortion Is Because Women “Weren’t Responsible Enough to Keep Your Skirt Down”
In the first ad of North Carolina’s general election, Attorney General Josh Stein’s campaign reveals previously unreported comments from Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, who said abortion “is about killing the child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.”
These new comments come after Robinson has also said that women who get an abortion are “guilty of murder” and threatening that if elected, he would “love to pass a law” that says “you can’t have an abortion in North Carolina for any reason” — including outlawing exceptions for victims of rape and incest.

- NBC News: New ad hits North Carolina Republican Mark Robinson for anti-abortion comments that women didn’t keep their ‘skirt down’ “The ad, which is part of a seven-figure buy by Stein’s campaign, also features Robinson appearing to say if he was governor and had a ‘willing’ state Legislature, he would sign legislation into law that bans abortion ‘for any reason.’ The spot also features Robinson saying: ‘For me there is no compromise on abortion. It makes no difference to me why or how that child ended up in that womb.’”
- News & Observer: “‘It kills me, somebody’s always talking about babies that are dying, and mothers that are in trouble,’ Robinson said. ‘Everybody knows that abortion in this country is not about protecting the lives of mothers. It is about convenience. It is about abortion on demand. That is exactly what it’s about.’”
- New York Times: “‘Abortion in this country is not about protecting the lives of mothers,’ Robinson says in one clip. ‘It’s about killing a child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.’ He adds, ‘It’s not your body anymore.’”
- USA Today: “The new ad also includes a clip of Robinson in 2020 telling a church congregation there is ‘no compromise on abortion’ for him and a segment from a February 2023 radio interview in which Robinson said if governor, he would propose a bill outlawing abortion ‘for any reason.’”
- CBS 17: “‘The Republicans have stripped women of their reproductive freedoms instituting their 12-week ban,’ said Stein. ‘And the words are very clear. There’s no compromise for [Mark Robinson].’”
