Marjorie Taylor Greene Threatens to Make Georgia’s GOP Gubernatorial Primary Even More Chaotic and Extreme
Extremist Marjorie Taylor Greene may be out of the U.S. Senate race – but she is still very much in the mix to run for Georgia governor. Greene made it clear over the past week that she’s leaving the door open to a run for governor in Georgia, telling NewsNation that “polling shows [she] can win the governor’s primary.” And the Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted this week after she bowed out of the Senate race that Greene “notably didn’t rule out a bid for governor to succeed term-limited Kemp.”
Even before Greene opened the door to a gubernatorial run, Georgia Republicans were already staring down a yearlong, nasty primary between Attorney General Chris Carr and Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. Both candidates have a record of opposing Medicaid expansion, supporting Georgia’s abortion ban, and backing policies that have led to mass layoffs at the CDC in Atlanta.
Now, with Greene potentially jumping in the primary, things are set to go from bad to worse – with all three candidates pushed to take extreme positions that put them out of touch with Georgians.
“Republicans are staring down a chaotic and vicious gubernatorial race that would leave whoever emerged out of touch with Georgia voters – and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s potential bid is set to make things even worse,” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “No matter who gets out of this primary, the eventual Republican nominee will be badly damaged and out of step with Georgians.”

Greene, who had previously said she was weighing a Senate and gubernatorial bid in addition to keeping her House seat, did not take a bid for governor off the table.

Almost immediately, national and Georgia Democrats began licking their chops about an MTG gubernatorial campaign. Even before the announcement, Democrats saw the swing state as their best pickup option.

Their thinking: An MTG campaign throws a wrench in a primary between sitting AG Chris Carr and Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who is expected to get in any week.

The Republican Governors Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

-
With Gov. Brian Kemp announcing he will not seek reelection, Taylor Greene told NewsNation’s “The Hill” that she still hasn’t decided if she’ll campaign for either seat.
-
“The polling shows I can win the governor’s primary or I can win the Senate primary,” she said.
-
“That’s a choice that I can make, and I’ll give it some thought,” she added.
