Malloy Statement on Roy Cooper’s Victory in North Carolina

Today, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, Chair of the Democratic Governors Association, issued the following statement on Governor-elect Roy Cooper’s victory in North Carolina’s gubernatorial race:

“Congratulations to Governor-elect Roy Cooper on a major win in North Carolina’s gubernatorial election,” said Gov. Malloy. “This election is a strong endorsement of Roy Cooper’s correct priorities, and a sharp rebuke of Gov. Pat McCrory’s agenda of raising taxes on the middle class, gutting education and passing the discriminatory House Bill 2 into law. In Roy Cooper, North Carolina will have a governor who can build an economy inclusive to all people; a governor who will invest in the state’s public schools and teachers; and a governor who can restore the state’s reputation as a business leader.

“Democratic governors won the marquee race of 2016, and the biggest state on the map. Democrats held all of our incumbents while winning governorships in three states that Donald Trump won. This election proves that strong Democratic candidates can win anywhere in the country.”

In April 2016, Sabato’s Crystal Ball Said North Carolina “Has Always Been the Marquee Gubernatorial Contest This Cycle.” According to Sabatos’ Crystal Ball, “The Tar Heel State’s statehouse race has always been the marquee gubernatorial contest this cycle. Not only is North Carolina the most populous state holding a gubernatorial race this year, but it’s also one of only two gubernatorial states (the much-smaller New Hampshire is the other) that are likely to be presidential swing states in the event of a close national race.” [Sabato’s Crystal Ball, 4/7/16]

Reuters Noted North Carolina is “This Year’s Marquee Race.” According to Reuters, “In this year’s marquee race, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, a Republican, is fighting for a second four-year term against Democratic challenger Roy Cooper, the state’s attorney general.” [Reuters, 11/8/16]
