Loud Boos, Bad News, and Extreme Views: AZ GOP Gov Primary Off to a Messy, Chaotic Start

If this week was any sign of what’s to come, Arizona Republicans are in for a long and grueling gubernatorial primary.

After far-right extremist Rep. Andy Biggs — who supports dismantling health care for hundreds of thousands of Arizonans and banning abortion — announced his intention to seek the GOP nomination, the state party’s annual meeting goers welcomed his candidacy with “thunderous applause.”

Meanwhile, merely the mention of Karrin Taylor Robson’s name — who did not attend the meeting — won her “a loud chorus of boos,” even as an independent expenditure spent money to run  mobile billboard ads around the event.

This backlash to Taylor Robson came right after recent polling from the state found that Andy Biggs has an almost 20 point lead over her, and leads the rest of the crowded field of Republicans rumored to jump in the race.

Facing immediate pressure to move further right, Taylor Robson also enthusiastically supported RFK Jr. for HHS Secretary right after he threatened access to abortion medication.

“It’s barely even started and the Arizona GOP primary for governor is a total mess focused on who can embrace the most toxic and extreme agenda,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. “As Andy Biggs and other potential candidates rush to take extreme positions, Governor Katie Hobbs continues working across the aisle to grow Arizona’s economy, lower the cost of housing and health care, keep families safe, and secure the border.”
