John James Picks Public Fight With Local GOP Leaders, Stretching Out Embarrassing Losing Streak
John James is facing blowback from GOP leaders in Oakland County, a critically important battleground in Michigan, as his stretch of rough weeks on the campaign trail shows no sign of ending soon.
Most recently, James pulled out of a debate organized by the Oakland County Republican Party, infuriating GOP leaders in Michigan Republicans’ largest county organization. In response, the Oakland County GOP declared “the gloves are off,” and circulated “a revised debate graphic with question marks superimposed over James’ face,” calling attention to his attempts to hide from voters.
The two-time statewide loser is caught in a nasty, wide-open primary, where he continues to shamelessly dodge debates and upset members of his own party. Last week, he was met with disapproving boos from fellow Republicans at the Michigan GOP convention, and a recent op-ed from a GOP strategist blasted the GOP candidates in the race, saying “the gubernatorial campaigns remain lackluster.”
It’s no surprise that polls show James’ campaign isn’t gaining traction after TMZ also recently spotted John James relaxing in the Caribbean during the government shutdown.
“John James isn’t doing himself any favors by picking messy public fights, hiding from voters, and soaking up the sunshine on a tropical vacation instead of doing his job,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton. “As James stretches out his embarrassing losing streak in this bruising and wide-open primary, the rest of the field doesn’t have much to be proud of either after they’ve tied themselves to Trump’s failing agenda that hurts Michiganders.”
