JANUARY: Guide to Dem Govs’ Inaugurations

This January, 15 Democratic governors will be inaugurated – including 11 new governors elected this November.
This comes on the heels of a record-setting election night for Democrats. Democrats flipped 7 seats on election night, the largest Democratic pickup since 1982. Democrats also protected all 9 Democratic-held seats, including all 5 incumbents. (Incumbent David Ige was already sworn in for a second term on Dec. 2).
The 2018 class of Democratic governors includes a record six Democratic women: Gov. Gina Raimondo (RI), Gov. Kate Brown (OR) and Governors-Elect Laura Kelly (KS), Janet Mills (ME), Gretchen Whitmer (MI), and Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM). Lujan Grisham will become the first Democratic Hispanic woman to serve as governor and Colorado Governor-Elect Jared Polis will become the first openly gay man inaugurated as governor.
