Is Cancer “a Distraction”? Scott Walker Seems to Think So.

Latest News

Yesterday, during a campaign stop in Milwaukee, Scott Walker told Wisconsinites to not be “distracted by that [pre-existing conditions] debate.”
Tony Evers, has called on Walker to drop Wisconsin from the lawsuit that aims to end protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Walker has refused to do so.
2.4 million Wisconsinites have a pre-existing condition including conditions like diabetes, cancer, and asthma. Thanks to the protections in the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies can no longer refuse to cover them. Walker’s lawsuit would eliminate that protection.
It’s no wonder Walker is desperately begging Wisconsin voters to ignore this critical issue. Just today, the Republican leader of the Wisconsin Senate said that he wasn’t sure if he had the votes to do anything to protect pre-existing conditions if Walker’s lawsuit succeeds.
According to a recent NBC/Marist poll, health care is the number one issue in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial race. And another poll from Marquette found that 78% of Wisconsin voters say covering pre-existing conditions is “very important.”
“Pre-existing conditions aren’t a distraction to the Wisconsin voters who have them–they’re a life and death matter. For Scott Walker to dismiss this issue is beyond tone-deaf. It’s callous and cruel.” said Democratic Governors Association Press Secretary Melissa Miller. “Walker doesn’t get to rewrite his long record of undermining protections for pre-existing conditions just because it’s politically toxic. Try as he might to change the topic and cover up reality, Wisconsin voters know the truth.”
