INVESTIGATION: “Property taxes skyrocket statewide, but not for Montana’s governor’s properties”

A shocking new investigation from MTN News reveals that while many Montanans are grappling with a “property tax fiasco” that has led to some seeing their annual property tax bills go up as high as 100 percent, one Montanan has largely been spared, and even saw his tax bill go down at one of his properties: Gov. Greg Gianforte.

The investigation notes that Gov. Gianforte had the chance to “dial back on rising residential property taxes, but failed to do so,” leaving thousands “trying to find out why their property taxes increased so much, and how they’re going to pay them.”

Republican Sen. Brad Molnar says, “state leaders including the governor could have prevented the property tax increases.” During the state’s last legislative session, Gov. Gianforte had the chance to address rising property tax increases, but instead prioritized signing tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, sticking Montana homeowners with “highest tax increase in history.”

“With every detail that emerges about Montana’s property tax crisis, it becomes clearer that the blame lies squarely at the feet of Gov. Gianforte,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. “It was bad enough that Gianforte failed to prevent these skyrocketing costs, but by seeing his own tax bill drop at the same time, Gianforte proved yet again that he has no problem selling out hardworking Montanans while he benefits.”
