In GA, DGA Chair Gov. Beshear and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Campaign on Expanding Medicaid

Gov. Beshear: “When you have a Democratic governor, the ability to expand Medicaid… becomes a reality.”

This week, Chair of the Democratic Governors Association Governor Andy Beshear hit the campaign trail in Georgia with Democratic nominee for governor Keisha Lance Bottoms to discuss the importance of winning Georgia and expanding Medicaid in the state.

Expanding Medicaid would deliver health care to hundreds of thousands of Georgians and be a lifeline for rural hospitals across the state. While Keisha Lance Bottoms has made Medicaid expansion a top priority, both Burt Jones and Rick Jackson would block Medicaid expansion and support DC Republicans’ devastating health care cuts.

Georgia is a top pickup opportunity for the DGA after Keisha Lance Bottoms decisively won the nomination last week. In a clear sign of support for Keisha, nearly 150,000 more voters showed up in the Democratic primary than the Republican primary. And while Republicans continue to battle it out in a nasty and expensive runoff, Keisha is talking to Georgians about expanding health care access, lowering costs, and protecting Georgians’ rights.

“When you have a Democratic governor, the ability to expand Medicaid, the ability to provide that care, becomes a reality,” Beshear said.

“Well, investing in Medicaid expansion will go a long way toward helping us reopen some of these rural hospitals and support hospitals like the Level One Trauma Center I mentioned,” Bottoms said. “This is a statewide issue no matter what community we are in. Even if you’re just passing through on the interstate, you’re likely near one of these closures, so it’s something we should all be concerned about.”

WMGT: Bottoms brings health care pitch to Warner Robins

Democratic nominee for governor of Georgia Keisha Lance Bottoms discussed expanding health care access for Georgians Thursday during a roundtable with Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

Bottoms says one of her top priorities is to expand Medicaid to cover thousands of low-income Georgians, specifically in rural areas.

“I believe in investing in these mobile health clinics, making sure that our public health centers have what they need to provide services,” she said. “And of course, taking it straight to the legislature to try and get Medicaid expanded in this state. We needed it to be done a long time ago, and the people in this state are suffering because it hasn’t happened.”

Bottoms says she plans to address the rising cost of health care premiums and prescription drug costs if elected Georgia governor. She’s also concerned about the number of birthing centers, ICU units and medical centers that have closed down in smaller areas.
