In Debate, Daniel Cameron Once Again Refused to Support Exceptions for Rape and Incest

In a debate last night for the governor’s race in Kentucky, Daniel Cameron repeatedly failed to support exceptions for rape and incest.

When asked directly to “clarify” his stance after he released several misleading statements in an attempt to cover up his long-held extreme position, Cameron was given several chances to support exceptions, yet only doubled down on his extreme position.

Cameron’s opposition to exceptions on the debate stage matches his record. He has repeatedly announced his support and defended in court “the current law,” which does not allow for exceptions for rape or incest, including in the case of a 9-year-old rape survivor. Cameron also completed a survey for Northern Kentucky Right to Life, where he pledged to go even further by restricting access to standard birth control, and has gone further by demanding access to private medical records for women who leave Kentucky to access reproductive health care.

This comes as Defending Bluegrass Values, a DGA-backed group, launched a new ad featuring a family who discovered their baby suffered a serious birth defect that would leave the child without a brain if carried to term. The couple was forced to leave the state to end the pregnancy due to the state’s current extreme law – which Daniel Cameron supports and defended in court numerous times.

“Daniel Cameron has refused to come out in support of exceptions for rape and incest because that is his true position, no matter how many ways he tries – or fails – to answer the question directly,” said DGA States Press Secretary Emma O’Brien. “Cameron’s position means little girls as young as nine years old will be forced to give birth to their rapist’s baby, families will have to give birth to children with no chance of surviving, and women and doctors could be criminalized. It’s not only wrong, but it’s extreme.”
