67% of New Jerseyans approve of Gov. Murphy’s COVID-19 response

A Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released today shows Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy continues to receive high job performance ratings for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic – 67% of New Jerseyans approved of the job Gov. Murphy is doing, including nearly half of Republicans.

Polling from Monmouth University in April showed a similar high job performance rating for the governor. Gov. Murphy has led his state by listening to public health experts and focusing on science and data rather than politics. He took early action on the coronavirus, forming a task force on Feb. 3, long before the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in New Jersey.

Gov. Murphy continues to remain vigilant in combating COVID-19 in New Jersey – mandating face masks outdoors and hitting pause on the state’s reopening when cases began to tick up.

Gov. Phil Murphy continues to receive high marks for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic in New Jersey, according to a new poll.

The Fairleigh Dickinson University poll released Thursday found 67% of Garden State adults approve of the job Murphy is doing responding to the crisis as the state is in its fifth month of grappling with a pandemic that has killed 15,634 people and infected at least 176,278 residents, according to

Only 26% said they disapprove of the job the Democrat is doing.

Murphy has seen his approval ratings skyrocket during the pandemic. A Monmouth University poll from April showed 71% of people approved of the job he was doing, which represented a 30-point increase from September.

Murphy’s job performance stands in stark contrast with what New Jersey residents think of President Donald Trump, according to the new FDU poll. A majority of people (58%) disapprove of the job Trump’s done responding to the pandemic, while 36% said they approve.

“Both men are facing reelection in the not-too-distant future,” said Krista Jenkins, a professor of politics at FDU and the poll’s director. “Trump is tanking across the board, except among his base, on what will be a seminal issue in November. Conversely, Murphy is pulling in admirable ratings even among his political opponents.”
