ICYMI: Gov. Roy Cooper On How Dem Govs Are the Last Line of Defense Against GOP Attacks on Voting Rights

Latest News

After losing both the White House and the Senate in 2020, Republicans are waging a war on our democracy to roll back voting access – they have introduced over 250 bills in 43 states with the goal of stripping Americans of their constitutional right to cast a ballot in a free and fair election. Experts estimate their proposals could create hurdles for tens of millions of Americans.

DGA Vice-Chair North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper responded to these “shenanigans” from Republicans, such as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, on CNN last week. Kemp just signed into law a bill restricting Georgians’ voting rights and seeking to disenfranchise Black voters. Among other things, the law criminalizes handing out water to voters waiting in long lines.

Gov. Cooper explained how having a Democratic governor can make all the difference when it comes to voting rights, saying, “Unfortunately, Georgia does not have a Democratic governor. It’s one of the reasons that I’m gonna be working really hard in 2021 and 2022 to get strong Democratic governors elected across the country.”

Republicans in other states are following Georgia’s lead – in Arizona, legislators are attempting to ram through nineteen bills aimed at limiting voting rights, and in Wisconsin, a proposed bill would end the practice of giving all electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the statewide vote and instead award electoral votes based on Congressional districts, which happen to be gerrymandered in favor of Republicans. In Iowa, Gov. Kim Reynolds just signed a bill shortening early and Election Day voting and making it harder to return an absentee ballot.

In states with Republican legislative majorities like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, and more, the last line of defense against these dangerous, anti-democratic proposals are Democratic governors.
