ICYMI: DGA Panel on Progress in Red and Purple States

Latest News

Last night, the Democratic Governors Association hosted a panel featuring governors in red and purple states who have been put to the test advancing Democratic policies in exceedingly difficult terrain.

The panel was moderated by Stacey Abrams, who served as minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives and saw first hand the difficulty in accomplishing Democratic priorities in a politically divided state.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer spoke about working across the aisle to make progress on policies from Medicaid expansion to increasing teacher pay and what the Biden-Harris ticket can do to win in swing states this November.

See some of what the governors had to say about navigating politically divided states below:

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear: “I think it starts with the issues: education, health care, opportunity – things that every family cares about, even more so, the things they may struggle with.”

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers: In Wisconsin, what I ran on is what we continue to work on: issues around health care; issues around our infrastructure, our roads, our internet; and of course, education. […] You gotta get back to the basics.”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer: “With a Republican-led legislature, up until Donald Trump set his sights on me, we had good bipartisan work that was being done. But once the president started attacking me at his press conferences or via Twitter, the whole tone changed.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz: “I think that idea of uniting the country, the idea that we’re not red and blue states, we’re the United States, the idea that we’re ‘One Minnesota’ – we have to work for that.”
