HOLIDAY WEEKEND RECAP: Robinson Defends HB2 as Republicans Warn of His Danger to North Carolina’s Economy

While North Carolinians were offline for Memorial Day weekend, not one but two reports further underscore just how dearly Lt. Governor Mark Robinson’s extreme and dangerous agenda and fringe allegiances would cost the state — which under Gov. Roy Cooper has seen record job growth and been rated the number-one state in the country to do business.

Reporting from CBS 17 uncovered previously unreported video, in which Robinson explicitly states that North Carolina Republicans “were right about HB2,” the notorious law that “sparked national backlash” and “cost the state more than $3.76 billion over 12 years in lost business.”

Meanwhile, a report from The Daily Beast highlighted Robinson’s penchant for dangerous conspiracy theories and anti-LGBTQ and antisemitic rhetoric, which have earned him praise on the white supremacist website Stormfront and “a following on the QAnon forum The Great Awakening, appearing on at least 77 message board threads between April 2023 and March 2024.”

Robinson’s conduct and fringe supporters have even prompted top North Carolina Republicans to sound the alarm about his “relationship with the business community, where his anti-Jewish and anti-LGBT remarks could lead firms to reconsider moving to the state or staying there if he takes over the governor’s mansion.”

“Mark Robinson has made it clear that he’s willing to do anything to impose his dangerous agenda, including drag North Carolina backwards to the days of HB2, even if it costs the state billions of dollars and thousands of jobs,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. “Even Republicans see that Mark Robinson and his dangerous extremism have no place in North Carolina.”
