Govs. Kelly and Lamont Blast Trump’s Tariffs Hiking Prices on Working Families and Small Businesses
Today, in anticipation of Donald Trump rolling out a sweeping set of tariffs that could cost working families an estimated $5,200 per year, Democratic governors condemned the disastrous impact that Trump’s trade war will have on working families and small businesses in their states.
DGA Chair Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont discussed how Democratic governors are laser-focused on lowering costs for families – despite Trump pushing policies that continue to raise costs on everyday goods including gas, groceries, electricity, cars, and more.

“As the governor of Kansas, a state whose farmers feed the nation and the world, the imposition of tariffs without consideration of the immediate and devastating impact on our agricultural industry and others, is unacceptable,” said DGA Chair Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly. “The cost of living is the number one issue, not only on Kansans’ minds, but on the minds of families across the country. From groceries, to gas, to housing, too many families are struggling to get by and are looking to their leaders for real solutions. […] Americans did not vote for this chaos. It’s not what they want or need from their leaders. We do need to do more to help our companies and workers compete by bringing businesses back home, by growing and strengthening our workforce, and by investing in American made manufacturing.”
“A tariff is a six letter word for tax, and this is a tax on the American people,” said Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont. “I see that Donald Trump is calling today ‘Liberation Day.’ As far as I can see, the only thing being liberated will be two, three, four hundred dollars a month out of your wallet.”
